Gone...Just a Week again!

Heading off to the Latin American Photographers Conference again ;) Back on the 15th. Mucho Bueno!!!

Excited to work on some of this years concept work and gear up for another Rockin' Year!!!

The new Jenison studio will be done soon so I'm really looking forward to that (if it drags out any longer I am gonna SNAP!!!!)

I have some fresh new stuff we're adding this year, I can't wait.

We've been booking 2012 Senior Sessions and some of the prime time summer time slots are starting to fill up so give us a call asap to schedule your session if you're a 2012 Senior! With the number of 2012 Senior sessions I've booked so far I'm thinking twice about even doing a brochure.

We're at 94-96% referral/repeat client base every year which I think is a great thing!! We let our images and our past clients do the talking for us, no marketing hype here. That's part of the reason for our new additional tag line "We stand behind our work, Not in front of it!" in reference to all the flashy photographer websites out there these days. Music and images that zip around the screen fading in and out for just a few seconds looks cool but when their customers get their pictures and there's no music or glam they're just left with mediocre images at best and feel let down.

This year I was amazed at the number of last minute sessions we booked in the late Fall from people who tried a "friend who takes pictures" or a new photographer they thought was "professional" but 4 months after their session when they finally got their proofs they were disappointed to say the least.

That's why my goal is (and has always been) to give you so many great images to choose from that you have a hard time just trying to narrow your favorites down to 100. Of course this sounds great until you're the one pulling your hair out trying to narrow down your favorites to 25, 50, 75 or 100! I've heard so many horror stories from new customers who went somewhere else with one of their older children and said "there literally wasn't even one image that was worth ordering from" and "the pictures they took didn't look anything like my daughter".

My job is to capture your senior's true personality without a bunch of crazy props or post production filters/actions in photoshop (used by other photographers to salvage & mask a just plain bad image). We capture great images that don't need to be mega-photoshopped but if you do like a little extra zing we can do that too...and it's free. With a properly lit, exposed, balanced image you can do anything in post production. With a bad image shot in program mode you have very few choices in salvaging the image, that's why we do it the right way from the start!

We shoot for a fun, relaxing, show their true personality session and we'll get so many phenomenal images you'll want all of them!!

Recognize one of our past seniors on our website? Ask any of them how they liked the whole experience! Word of mouth is key for us and that's why we will still be shootin' 30 years from now!!

At Last...a Break!

it was waaaay to short though!

We made a run to Chicago for the last supercarsaturdays and cmr9.3.10

I brought limited camera equipment since there's not a whole lot of space in a Lambo (I only had room for 1 camera body, 2 lenses, light meter, flash and syncro cord).

Here are a few of the 300 or so pics I took Fri & Sat (in chronological reverse).

These first car pics are STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CAMERA with NO retouching (just like my portrait photography, my theory is get it right in the camera and you can spend computer time enhancing images not trying to fix them). When I have some time I'm going to photoshop these bad boys and really make them ROCK!!! If the background looks familiar in these first few car pics it's because the location is where the chase scenes in Batman were filmed!

Nick's Viper - this image will ROCK even more with some photoshop magic!!!

Josh's 996 turbo - sweet

Chris' flat black vette - the blue color cast was a happy accident, it's from the blue Lambo lights next in line for a shot. shooting a flat black car with a dark background was a little trickier than I thought it would be.

Tim's Lamborghini Gallardo - any picture of this car is ROCKIN' When I get a chance to work this image over in photoshop I'm going to have to print a 30x40 or bigger!!! Same thing goes for the next shot.

I really liked this shot but wish I had all of my lighting gear, a single corded SB800 was great but I can only imagine how I'd rock this shot with the right gear. That's the real sky too, no photoshop magic on this one.

Heading into Chicago - just a little blur for some action.

I said I was going to ask the police officer to turn his lights back on for a fun shot, someone bet me a dollar I wouldn't, I won.

And the first ticket goes to...Josh. Not for speeding, window tint. Happy to say nobody got a speeding ticket!!!

Troy's Z06 vette - his is hands down the BEST sounding vette I have ever heard, I'd rank it right up there with Ferrari and Lamborghini any day!! So loud in fact it woke us up Sat morning driving down Michigan and we were inside on the 20th floor of the Hard Rock Hotel!!!

Lights, cameras...action!

Yesterday in fact! I love movies but what I love even more is seeing everything that goes into creating a great movie. Yesterday I got too see the real pros in action right next to our downtown studio location! 30'x40' diffusion panels, 20'x30' bounce panels, a truckfull of gobos and light modifiers (literally, it was a big stake truck packed full), HUGE light stands, million dollar cameras, generators, a crew of about 50 people...it was AWESOME!

The movie they were shooting was "30 Minutes or Less" and in between my sessions I got to kick back and watch them film.

Above is a shot I took of Jesse Eisenberg & Aziz Ansari during one of the takes. I'm just kickin back snackin on some Taco Bell when I realize "hey, I got my camera equipment right here in the back seat, why not snap a few" so ta da, here's one of them.

It was so cool, the crew was gigantic...they had one guy just for metering light. That's the first time I've EVER seen anyone (besides myself of course) using a light meter at our downtown location!

I love seeing movies in the works! A few weeks ago I stumbled onto the set of the upcoming movie "Touchback". I was driving down the road with my 3 1/2 year old daughter and saw a glimpse of a film crew and cameras, I thought maybe it was a tv commercial. Since I love anything video I figured we'd check it out plus I figured it would be fun for my daughter to experience. After taking a side street to come back around I saw about 40 people and some massive lighting...that's when I knew it was actually a movie being filmed. Very Cool!!!

Other News:

We now have the concrete parking lot and driveway completed at the Jenison studio! Now it's time to get cranking on the inside. We originally hoped for a fall 09 opening (which came and went) but I'm really thinking it will be complete late this Fall (if not I'm going to snap!).

We've been slammed with sessions and orders all summer (part of the reason I haven't posted anything since May:). August booked up solid a few weeks ago, September is a little over 60% booked but there are still openings so call us soon! October has a pretty decent amount of openings as well.

We've shot a ton of PHENOMENAL sessions this summer!!!! I can't wait to post some samples!

REMEMBER we shoot from 8AM til 12PM M-F so even though school is starting soon we can still get you in for a session! If we are booked during the week and can't get you in I'm thinking about picking a Saturday in Sept for senior sessions.

What's New...

Still getting slammed with orders for 2010 seniors, booking 2011 seniors already, working on updating the 2011 senior website, marketing materials, construction on the new Jenison studio, updating the Grand Rapids studio, family life...this list just keeps getting bigger! What ever happened to my slow time in the spring?

I did get a nice little break this past Saturday...SuperCarSaturdays!!! My friend asked my if I wanted to drive with him to Chicago to go to a car show...let's see, 3 hour drive there, 3 hours back in a Lamborghini...uuuh, YES I'm in!!! Not to mention all of the cars I saw once we arrived! Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes, Roll Royce, Tesla, Audi...I lost 5lbs in water weight that day just from drooling.

I'm such a ding dong, I've got thousands of dollars in pro cameras and lenses, do I bring them with me? No, I didn't even think to bring my little Fuji Z5 point and shoot! So I had to resort to the whopping 2 megapixel camera in my cell phone (plus I was there as a supercar fan not a photographer). It's so bizarre to take pictures with no light meter, shooting in auto and no custom color balancing. Next time I'll bring the good stuff and get some really killer stuff.

Gone...just a week.

2010 Senior season is coming to a close (still waiting on around 16 orders...I really like a closure before the new 2011 season kicks off, but hey, at least it keeps me busy during the "slow season". Seriously though, do I ever get a slow season...it would be kind of nice...no, I'd rather be busy:)

This year is gonna ROCK!i!

We have a bunch of new stuff coming out (not gonna say what it is just yet) but it's tizight. We're doin' the stuff that our seniors want and that's all about what we do, makin' our clients happy!

I'm homesick already and I haven't even left yet, although I'm looking forward to generating some fresh ideas for things to come (and I'm going to try and pick 300 or so favorite images from the 28,656 images we shot for our 2010 seniors (which I'm bringing along on my laptop), now I know why I keep hearing "we really had a hard time picking just 75 proofs from our session", that's always been my personal goal with every session...giving every senior way more than they bargained for!).

This year is gonna ROCK!i!

Oh, before I sign off...we're getting all the details hammered out on our "get all of your images on disk" deal. That's right, ALL the images! If we shot 300 images during your session and you only ordered 6 for your print order, now's your chance to get the other 294 images (plus the 6 edited ones) to use for whatever your heart desires!!!! I got the idea as I was archiving older session and was thinking "this stinks, I seriously have about 80 images from this session that ROCK (as in I'd use any one of these for the website or brochure or for a 40"x60"studio sample enlargement), they ordered 5 poses...all the rest of these images are going to go into archive and probably never be seen again!" I'd rather offer them at a mega deal and have them be used for something, rather than have them sit unseen on a hard drive forever.

I've said it in the past and I'll say it again "I'll put any of my un-edited proofs up against our competitor's edited prints any day of the week!". I hear it all the time "the proofs are awesome, I don't know what could be done to make them better" and "these untouched proofs look better than my friend's final pictures". We don't try and take a few good pictures, we create great images, period! Our sessions aren't "tests" or "experiments", we know our clients don't have the time to "try and get a few usable pictures" from a hobby photo enthusiast. We just do it right the first time!

Did I mention...this year is gonna ROCK!i! That's all for now.

Imitation is...

...the sincerest form of flattery. We're flattered but seriously, with all the great photographers around this country why copy us?

I got an email last week alerting us to a local photographer copying one of our senior video game image concepts. This is the image we shot two years ago:

I won't even mention who the offending photographer was, it really doesn't matter. We had issues with them copying pretty much everything we did a few years ago and after calling them I thought they were done, I guess not. At least they waited a while to copy this time.

So first off I want to thank our fans who alert us to this kind of stuff! Most of the time there's nothing we can do unless it's one of our copyrighted sports composites or other specialty work, but it's nice to know. We've had a few tips this year that we did take action on, one of which was settled out of court. Any fan that provides info on copyright violations that lead to a settlement will be hooked up with free photography and/or a cash reward. If you see a copyright infringement Do Not Contact the offender, there are a couple reasons why. First, I know we have a lot of hard core fans that want to stand up for us but we need to be the ones who make contact with them. Second, if you contact them first you're giving them a "heads up" and they might remove the material before we have a chance to document all the details. Also, we're not talking about our customers, we give them permission to use images for facebook and other online services as long as the image retains our logo. We're talking about other photographers or businesses that steal our images or copyrighted concepts to profit from them.

So anyway...I call the photographer to find out what the deal is and he completely went off on me! The best way to describe it was a delusional paranoid conspiracy theory rant, it was actually pretty funny. I don't know if he was just having a bad day, week, month...but WOW!

He did bring up the fact we've been asking trespassing photographers to leave the property at our downtown studio when we see them. Yeah, I'm the bad guy for asking someone trespassing on private property to leave. It's not like I run at them waving a bat screaming "get out of here!" It's not my rule, it's the property owners policy. They don't want to get sued if someone gets hurt on their property. It's not just us, pretty much every tenant in the building is sick of it and asks photographers to leave also. It's not a public park for any photographer to come and use. I have close friends that are photographers, if I saw one of them down there shooting I'd kick them out too. I look at it this way, how would you like it if someone walked into your studio, set up one of your backdrops/props that you bought or rent and started shooting a session. Anyone who wants to shoot there is more than welcome to sign a lease and pay rent like the rest of us do. It would actually be pretty cool to have a bunch of different photographers in the building.

the New Studio Update...

...with a progress picture, finally. The New CLICKphotographic Jenison Studio is coming soon...

Things are coming along and we're still shootin for the Fall'09 opening. I can't wait til it's done, it's seems like it's taking FOREVER, (although spending a year and a half jumping through hoops for zoning, variances, permits, code requirements and other assorted challenges didn't help the timeline) let's just say it's been a trying experience.

Other news: Still booking sessions like crazy!!! We were thinking of doing more marketing in July but the way it's going so far this year I may actually scale back marketing for next year.

I'm MEGA excited about this years senior clients. All of the seniors who have booked with us so far this year are saying the same thing "We checked out everyone and CLICKseniors.com was our #1 choice" They love our style and creativity. They love the fact we don't play all the marketing hype games or have hidden fees. They love the great pricing, the fact that it's all listed right online and how we don't pressure clients into spending more than they want to.

Seriously, we have the ABSOLUTE BEST CLIENTS in the area!!! They love what we do and appreciate our work, what more could I ask for. I kind of feel guilty getting ALL of the great clients and leaving the rest for other photographers...not really.

If you didn't and you would like one just give us a call and we can send you one (although all of the images in it are right on the website, but if you prefer paper that's ok too).

We finally have our "Frequently Asked Questions" section up on the website CLICKseniors.com (I know, it was supposed to be done two years ago!) and it answers a lot of the questions we get. Be sure to check it out since it covers questions about sessions, proofing, ordering and more. Everyone is just LOVIN' the FAQs section!

We're booking sessions like mad! I think I've booked more sessions in the past two weeks than I did in May, June & July combined last year! If you haven't booked your session don't worry just yet, we're at about 30% capacity so there's still room on the schedule for you. The earlier you book the better the deal so don't wait too long! The only thing we need to hold your session date is just the session fee.

Jenison Studio Update: Framing has started on the 26' x 40' addition, it's exciting to see some actual progress! We're shooting for a Fall '09 opening. I'll post some pictures once it looks a little nicer :)

btw, we started working on the wedding website CLICKweddingPhotography.com but so far all we have is the Galleries. I guess it's better than nothing. I hope to have more info posted soon for weddings.

I also need to get a crackin' on the CLICKphotographic.com website, I don't think I've updated it in at least 2 years. I think I'm going to do a complete facelift on it...now if I can just find some time.

2009 Senior Giggle Outtakes...

While selecting images of some of our 2009 seniors I thought I'd put together a quick video of them having a good time.

I grabbed around 110 images and made it. The images are straight "out-o-the-camera" without any editing other than resizing.

What a riot, I can't help but smile and laugh when I watch it! If you're a 2010 senior and wonder if you'll have fun with us...the answer is YES!!!

The 2010 Senior website is in progress, maybe another week. I literally have thousands of (well over 10,000) images to pick from so it's pretty tough picking favorites.

I had to post pics of two CLICK Galleria orders that came in this week. The first is this mega cool triptych:

Each panel is 12" wide and 20" tall and the overall size is 20"x38"! Definitely the coolest gallery wrapped canvas I've ever seen. Price - $460.00

I'm still getting swamped with 2009 senior orders (they've been coming in slow this year) and still actually shooting 09 seniors (just had another last week) but I hope to get the wedding, children's and 2010 senior pics and info up on the website soon!

Update on the J-town studio? Not a lot of change since my last update other than the walls for the 26'x40' studio addition were poured and backfilled early Dec., got some more windows in and more siding up, still a lot more to do though. I can't wait til it's done!!!

Kids Update & More...

I'm still trying to get caught up on posting some fresh kids stuff. Here's just one from a session a few weeks ago.

I know, don't remind me, I have oodles of kids sessions that should be posted before this one but I'm adding those to the fresh new kids section of the website (if I post too much new stuff to the blog it gives the other photogs something to copy, I'd rather make them wait or think of something on their own).

Which reminds me...I just posted some quick comp senior sports examples July 28, 2008 and what do you know, Aug 10 some guy in Belmont "TRIES" to copy the shot! The Nerve! Crusty, no Rusty, no Musty something old was his name. He didn't even come close (didn't understand why I shot it the way I did, that's what happens when you copy, it looks kind of like the original but it just don't work). I'm both honored and flattered! Here's a great idea for your next wedding - shoot the bride solo and make it black & white but just the flowers of the bouquet are in color!!! (it's soooo fresh). Enough ranting, I'm really flattered other shooters check out my blog and like my work so much (uhum, dan:).

So what else is new?
New J-town studio is coming along (slowly but surely). Still waiting on the architect.

Gearing up for the classes we're offering to Professional and Amateur photographers once the studio is finished. Don't go spending that hard earned cash on filters, actions, generic holiday card templates, announcements or boarders! Be Original, Be Fresh! We'll teach you how and why, literally saving you hundreds or even thousands!! I can't help but comment on what I saw again at the beach shooting tonight. One of the local studios (starts with an H, in Grandville) with 6 seniors lined up for pictures. "now serving senior #4, sit on that rock just like #3 did, #5 watch closely, you're next". I always wonder, do they keep the number dispenser at their studio or do they bring it on location :)

...so I gotta keep it simple. It's been insane! I have around 26 or so senior sessions to pull images from but I just don't have the time right now. I just couldn't resist posting these beach pics though. I'll try to find time to post more samples in the upcoming weeks. I have some really sweet puddle images, some downtown GR images, some in the woods images and a ton of studio images (and that's just senior sessions, I've been way behind on kids images, soon, I promise).

There are still a few open slots for senior sessions. Call SOON!

We thought about doing a follow up senior postcard mailer in August to remind people to call. We've been so busy shooting and booking senior sessions we didn't even need to. Gotta love that!!!

Busy, yup, more like CRAZY BUSY!!!!

Every time the phone rings it's the same comment: "every other studio's pictures look the same, CLICK is different, it looks like you really capture people's personalities" and I never get sick of hearing it because that's why I do what I do.

I'd love to be like the other studios, it would be a lot easier. Same old same old, pose girls just like the guys, one pose fits all. Showing ALL seniors on the same old tile floor stucco wall as if the camera is permanently mounted there, same picture only the people change year after year after year. But that's not how we do it. How many times are you a senior? Are you just like everyone else? We don't think so! I love the challenge of capturing real personality.

We still have some openings in Aug and a fair amount left in Sept so Don't Worry just yet (but you should at least call and check availability before we book up solid).

New News:

Just signed up with twitter (http://twitter.com/clickseniors). Sister in-law said I should. I heard about it last year on G4 tv but figured it was just another distraction. First thoughts- I have better things to spend my time on (aka blog). But figured I'd check it out, it did sound kind of simple and fun. Signed up, tried to set it up...second thoughts, too many tweets, server overloaded, why did I sign up? I'm giving it a month to see if I likey, so far not so much.

Other News:

Yes, that was Tim Kasberger in the parade with us on the 4th of July (thanks for the inquiries). Tim and I go way back... (back to when we were 14 year old hooligans). I created the TK logo, website and marketing materials for TK foto, that's part of the reason why I waited until he retired to push my portrait photography, I felt it was a conflict of interest. I also created the Color Inc logo btw.

Other Other News:

If your sending session deposits you can send them to our 896 home office or the 7813 Cottonwood Dr, Jenison, MI 49428 studio address (which is still under construction, don't get me started...). We Do Not have a mailbox at our 1111 Godfrey Studio so don't send anything there, use either one of the Jenison ones.

Ah Ah Ah Ah Still Alive, Still Alive...

...Yep, I'm still alive, just been too busy to post anything new.

I'm starting to think that updating the website might be a bad thing! If I'm this busy with images that are 1 or 2 years old on the site, it's gonna be insanely busy with the fresh stuff!

Quick Notes:

Grandville 4th of July parade was a riot!!!!! A bit stressful though!

We had over 12,000 pieces of skittles, tootsies, laffy taffys, nerds and other assorted goodies but we came up about two blocks short (I always feel bad for the people at the end of the parade route, they always get left out) next year I'm saving a few bags of goodies just for the end! Although, having over 30 people throwing treats will do that. Luckily "Jim D" was at his summer home or our number of candy tossers would have been even higher (with his entourage and all)!!!

For the 2009 seniors that were not at the parade and missed our nice freebie, Chillax...we're still gonna hook you up! Let us know you read the blog and give us the promo code "IMJ4P" and we'll still get you your free 16 wallets and an additional pose! That's just how we do.

I know I'm going to regret that one! Our 2008 June & July so far is busier than last years Aug & Sept!

Side Note

We're getting a lot of calls where people are thinking were booked solid in August and September! We're NOT booked solid yet! We booked up in May and June because of the mega deals (note to self: not so much next year) but we still have open session time slots in Aug, Sept & Oct.

We keep at least 2 days a week open for children and family sessions. When the other days get booked up with senior sessions we open up those 2 reserved days. It's our buffer zone.

So yes, we probably have an open time slot for you!

She's like a little super model in training! I just pretty much let her do her thing and captured images along the way. Like this last picture, she picked the flower (well, it was actually a weed flower, clover I think) all on her own with absolutely no direction from her mother or myself. Kids, what a riot!

Not Playin' Favorites,..

...just had to post this one quick.

I always feel guilty when I post an image from one of the latest sessions but haven't posted any from the previous sessions earlier that day or a day or two before. It all depends on how busy I was after the session. Really, I'm not playing favorites!

After shooting 3 or 4 sessions in a row and getting home at 7pm, I'm scramblin' to get the images online for previewing. I love it when I have a clear afternoon and time to get home, post the images and then play around with a few of my faves.

Here's one I'm really diggin' and had the time to tweak a little:

Hope to have time to post more from this session and some of our previous sessions Friday. I also need to update the website soon, hopefully I'll see a bit of a slow time the week after the 4th of July but it's not looking too likely.

Side Notes:
1. If you're looking to book your senior session in August or September give us a call soon. I know a lot of you are waiting on that tan... We typically get hammered with calls mid to late July and all the premium times go fast! Compared to last year, we've had more senior sessions in June of '08 than August of '07 so It's gonna be busy!!

2. Want your name on your wallets? Yep, we do that! What's it gonna cost? $0.00! That's right, nada. If you have any special requests just let us know. Just like our blemish retouching and image enhancements, FREE!

3. This one needs to be on our FAQs section of the website but I haven't had the time. I hear this at least 4 times a week, "Who will be taking the pictures?" That would be me, Michael, the only shooter at CLICK!

I've had way too many clients tell me horror stories of going to other studios assuming the name on the door was the person who would be shooting the pictures. What they got was an "assistant or staff or associate photographer" and the images were sub-standard. That won't fly at CLICK. Every image on the website was shot by me and that's who you get for your session! I'm a bit of a perfectionist and won't hand off the camera just because it's more profitable.

...had a few minutes to work with an image this afternoon and just couldn't decide what I liked best.

We keep hearing that we're known for great images straight out of the camera (which I love to hear since that's my goal with every session), but we also like to give our images a little extra zing when we think it benefits the shot.

If you have some ideas for your session that might include sepia, cross-process, selective color, black & white, mega saturation, film grain, distressed look...whatever it may be, let us know! We don't charge extra to tweak your image to make it the way you want it! We'll also make suggestions for images we think would look good with a little extra bling.

This particular image was beggin' for a little CLICK juicification (definition: to make an image even more juicy). It was a great shot to start with but I thought it could use something more. The first was just a little extra contrast, the other two were tweaked a little more.

So they are up for a vote and feedback!!!

I Have the Best Job...

One of my favorite things about being a photog is meeting new people and hearing their stories.

I have a tendency to get a little chatty (get me started and I can talk for hours!) but I just love learning about new people and everything that makes them who they are.

Tonight I had the pleasure of meeting Erica and it was great!

Gotta Keep it Short...

...too busy to post lately, which is a good thing I guess! Here are a couple pics from a session last night. We got a couple hundred rockin' images! Seriously! I get so excited and caught up in capturing images that I tend to shoot way too many. I always feel bad though when I hear comments from the mom like "we have it narrowed down to 80 pictures", "there's just too many great ones to choose from!". I think that's a good problem to have:)

You Never Know Who You Might Meet...

I don't know how many of you are familiar with "Jim D" aka "Pickins" but I got to meet him and had lunch with him last week!!!

I had first heard of him and almost met him spring break of 2000 in Cancun.

I had a photo shoot for LaBoom (a dance club in Cancun) spring of 2000 and I figured with MTV being there he'd have to make an appearance and that would be my chance.

As it turned out the night I was at LaBoom "Jim D" decided to stay in for the night, probably to get away from all the fans and photographers!

While I may not have had a chance to meet him that night I did get to see Dr. Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dogg up close thanks to my VIP credentials. The funny part was I didn't even bring a camera that night since I'd been shooting the night before and quite frankly just wanted to enjoy the free cocktails that night and relax. Oh well, it was still a riot. I felt like a celeb when they lifted the red velvet ropes to let me into the club in front of the more than 3000 spring breakers waiting in line to get inside.

Rockin' Senior Session...

Congratulations Mani...

...I'd heard it on the streets a while back but dismissed it as rumors but it was true, Mani retired from the photography business!

I'm actually bummed out about it. After hanging out with him last year at WPPI in Vegas I discovered that Mani is about the nicest guy you'll ever meet, add to that the fact that he's a portrait photographer with integrity (which believe it or not is a rarity these days) and that adds up to someone who'll be missed in the photo biz. Plus I think he's too young to be getting out!

We just wanted to congratulate him and wish him the best of luck in the future! At least I'll still be able to see him at Color Inc. and maybe WPPI next year.

Forgot About This Little Cutie...

...and remembered again last week while putting the order together. Isn't she just sooo cute.

I'll be working on updating the newborn, childrens and family sections of the website soon (since it's been about a year and a half since the last update!). We've been so busy lately that the website has been neglected. Oh yeah, the wedding website will launch soon as well.

Other notes: If you ordered a CLICKseniors T-shirt or mentioned you'd be interested they are coming! We have the beta version (prototype v.b.001) and we'll post some pics soon. I was pretty close on pricing, around $25.

Senior brochures will be hitting the streets in a few weeks and we'll be announcing some promos for 2009 seniors, stay tuned.

J-town studio is coming along, or should I call it "Dandelion Farms". I just dropped 20,000 square feet of weed control on the lawn and it didn't even cover half? I've never seen so many dandelions, seriously. Still working on the demolition/construction. I'll post some pics when it's not such an eye sore.

Last Solo Wedding...

...ahhh. Just finished my last solo wedding last night.

If you haven't heard yet CLICK photographic has teamed up with Chuck Heiney Photography to shoot weddings together!!!

Why am I so excited?

Because it means even better images for my clients!!! Don't get me wrong, the images I get shooting solo are incredible but what happens when you have two pro shooters on the scene, just wait and see.

I knew right from the get go that shooting weddings is a two person job, but with me being such a control freak I never wanted any help. First off if I got an assistant shooter how good would they be? Seriously, if they were that good they'd be shooting on their own. If they weren't that good what's the point, plus how much enthusiasm could they have getting paid a few hundred for a days work. Don't even get me started on husband/wife teams...or the ones who hand your wedding off to an assistant completely. If you're looking for a wedding photographer make sure you ask who shot the examples you are viewing on the website or in a book!

So what's it gonna cost you ask?

We start at $2,200 (and you get all of the high res images on disk!) Want to add an album? No problem. A 30x40 gallery wrap canvas, no problem. You build your wedding package just the way you want. No need to get locked into a package with a lot of things you don't want or need.

What's even better is that our images are ready to print as is without countless hours of photoshop corrections (you know what I mean, wedding dress and skin tones are yellow in one shot, blue in the next, orange, red, green, blown out, dark gray...all over the place).

If you want some enhancing done on some of the images we can do that too! Some people want it, some prefer clean crisp properly exposed images. When you start with a great image you can do just about anything.

I'll be posting a few of the wedding images Monday when I get some time.

I Suppose it's time...

...for a new self portrait, since it's been over two years since the last!

So what was wrong with the old one? Well, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great either.

A few weeks ago I was at a photo seminar and a take home gift was a dvd chocked full of hilarious stuff. The guy who puts these together did a little thank you, intro blah blah blah thing at the start of the dvd. In the background he was sure to have his computer as well as a canon camera with a 400mm 2.8 lens on a tripod. My wife asked why he had a telescope behind him (must be very proud of that lens to include it in every interview :). Now I know that lens was probably 5 or 6 grand but c'mon.

Immediately I thought about my self portrait on the website and started laughing. It was an image of me holding a camera with all kinds of lights, lenses and other equipment (I'm such a dorkasaurus sometimes) and realized it was time for something different. It's great if you can laugh at yourself sometimes :).

So I got a freshy up now.

As a side note, the other thing I got a kick out of was the mother & son senior photographer team shooting in auto program mode inside the studio. That was a definite first for me, the comedy value alone was priceless!! Now I understand why most photogs say 3-4 weeks before proofs are ready...because it takes them that long to correct all of the images!

BTW, at CLICK we have your proofs ready for viewing in 24-48 hours after your session!

We shoot it right saving our clients time and money. As another photog told me "your images straight out of the camera are better than most other photogs edited, tweaked, modified and manipulated images" to which I replied "that's just the way we do things, the right way. I have better things to do than spend 40 hours a week in photoshop correcting what should have been done before the shutter release was pressed."

That's part of the reason why we offer FREE blemish removal and enhancements on final prints. The time we save by shooting properly exposed and balanced images can be used to retouch/enhance the images and take them to the next level, something others charge $30+ per image to do.

Why is it I Design & Build My Own Website...

So I guess the April Fools joke was on me! I design and code my own sites (been doing it for over 15 years now) and I neglected to check it out on a PC before launching the CLICKseniors.com start site (that's such a rookie mistake).

It seems that I had a little glitch in part of my code that made it display a bit whacky on the PC, it was fine on a MAC (why does that not surprise me). Anyway it's all good now after editing 90 pages of html.

That got me thinking. I spend a ton of time creating one of a kind stuff. Do people even notice or care? Should I just sign up for one of the GENERIC blue domain websites that ALL photographers have (you know the one that starts out with the splash page with an image and the two choices "View in Full Screen I View in Same Window" and "View Our Blog, Get Flash Player" and some lala music playing in the background.

What's even funnier is now photographers can get pre-designed postcards, brochures, folders, business cards and marketing materials. All you have to do is have them drop in your images. How cool (sarcasm) is that. High School Seniors will be getting the same brochure or postcard from 10 different studios! Generic and confusing, and to top that off, if they're both SPA members they could have the same senior model pictures in those brochures!!! They should just provide stock images of seniors so the photographers won't have to bother with shooting the pictures themselves.

By the way, we are NOT spa members, NEVER will be, our top 10 list was just a pre-April Fools joke. We do our own lighting, posing, backgrounds, set up and stunts. All of our pictures are of people who came to us for great images. That's just the way we do things.

Now that I think about it I'm glad we design our own stuff, that's what makes us different:)

I hope ya'll like the upside down websites. I already have April 1st 2009 planned, I can't wait.

Top 10 Excuses...

Only 1 more day until the April Fools day shenanigans begin. It always sneaks up on me every year and I forget to plan some pranks, not this year!

Well, it's been about 4 months since I last blogged. We've been busy to say the least. We're days away from the launch of our new senior stuff and there's a bunch of new stuff on the way.

I was trying to think of a good reason I haven't been blogging more, instead I came up with a list of the "Top 10" excuses for not blogging in such a long time.

Here we go...

10. Forgot I had a blog.

9. Pulled a muscle in my index finger competing on "Unbeatable Banzuke" and was unable to press the shutter release ever since.

8. Spent 3 months at SPA building my portfolio. Come to think of it, I'm not sure it could be called my portfolio. They got the models, posed them, set up the lights, metered them, set up props & backgrounds, all I had to do was press the button. Hmmm.

7. I was on tour as Hannah Montana. See, I used to be a Power Ranger (the red one) but that gig kind of dried up. It's amazing what a wig and makeup can do!

6. Just realized the Presidential election was fast approaching and needed to start working on my campaign.

5. Got sick of seeing my ideas on other photog sites 2 weeks after I posted them. Figured if I don't post anything new they'll have to copy someone else.

4. My keyboard was broken.

3. Spent the past few months shooting sessions with no memory card in the camera so I have nothing to show.

2. Couldn't remember my blog user name and password.

and the #1 reason I haven't posted in months...

1. Spent the past 4 months on a remote island off the coast of Japan training to become a Ninja Warrior.

All joking aside, things are going really well.

The New Studio is still in progress. We had some obstacles we had to get through with the township but we're all set now and continuing with renovations and construction.

Our new CLICKseniors.com website will be up soon and we'll announce some promos and specials.

Two kids sessions today, a fun break from all the seniors I've been shootin lately.

We have a TON of new kids images to post and I hope to get to them in the next week or so. I started getting a few of the images of the cutie patooties together but ran out of time and couldn't post them tonight.

The first cutie posted above got a little preferential treatment (That's my little baby! I just shot her 9 month pictures tonight but I'm a couple weeks late. My wife forgot to call and schedule an appointment and I've been booked solid so what's a few extra weeks. Paying customers first right!)

The other was from a session this afternoon. Those eyes just reach out and grab you, very captivating and a real cutie too!

Don't get me wrong, still shootin stuff good enough to be in the top 5 in West Michigan but just feelin the pressure of always trying to come up with new stuff. There's something to be said about shooting everyone the same, time after time, riding the wave as they say, but I just refuse to fall into that track. Tonight my creativity got recharged!

So tonight I have a senior session and I just wasn't in the shootin mood (the shootin mood is when I'm about ten times more excited about the session than the senior is, tonight it was about twice as excited...).

So they show up and I'm doin' the intros, talking about what she's looking for, and we start shooting. In the past, connecting with the senior comes pretty easy but I'm always so self conscience (do they like me, am I too wacky, do I smell?)

So we're pounding out frames and I'm just sweatin (literally, we shut the air off cause it's been pretty cool lately, one of the down sides of two studios, can't be in two places at the same time).

So, the whole time I'm just workin it. I'm so self critical, I want every shot to even better than the one before. I knew we got some great images, I just had no idea how many...

So I get back to the J-town studio and start downloading images...WOW! (I never thought my white lightning 300 and a 12" umbrella could do so much).

I had a riot!!! It took a little more work than usual, I just hope Jaime had as much fun as I did. I need to get her as my L rep, she was workin it and it shows!! You too MJ - better pictures, better prices, free stuff...am I tempting you yet?

...to post these. Now I'm not playin' favorites (I've got about 14 other previous senior session highlights to post) but I just had to post these pics from my session tonight, CLICK NY west and some downtown shots.

So, I'm on the phone today, giving directions to our downtown studio to Amy's mom and we come to find out that Amy has been fencing right next door to us for 4 years. Literally, 10 feet across the hall at West Michigan Fencing Academy! Small world!!

One of the things I love about my job is how I get to meet new people and hear their story. Amy, wow, fencer, violinist, literary guru, world traveler...the list goes on...

I don't like to get too much info on what my seniors are thinking for shots, I like to get a vibe once they're in studio and shoot from there. No pre-planed shot list or pose list, we just go with the flow.

The shots we're posting tonight don't even scratch the surface, we hammered down some rockin frames! I had an absolute riot!

I love the studio one! That session was a riot! There are literally about 50 other shots from that session that just plain rock!!! I'm just glad I don't have to pick the finals!

The beach session was a blast too! I narrowed my top picks down to 16 for that session. I need to stop shooting so many, but when we're having fun it's hard to stop clicking:)

Praise The Lord!, my car broke down...

I know what you're thinking. Has this guy finally snapped. Were 2-5 sessions a day for the month of August just too much for him?

Nope, I'm just happy to be so blessed.

After a near fatal soaking of my mobile studio gear last week Wed (Praise The Lord everything was ok) I noticed a strange sound coming from the brakes of my truck. Thursday afternoon when I backed out of the driveway I heard a clunk and then a nasty grinding sound. After a quick inspection (and a HUGE chunk of brake pad laying in the driveway) I came to the conclusion that it was time for new brakes. To add insult to injury, while under the truck I also noticed my drive shaft cv boot was torn (like they say, when it rains it pours:).

So how come "Praise The Lord"?

Let me tell you. At first I was thinking "come on, I'm just starting to get ahead and things are looking good" then it hit me, don't be negative, God has given me a gift to fix things myself. So instead of spending over $2000 at the jeep dealer for a new half-shaft, brake pads and rotors I'm spending 2 hours and $156 and appreciating another gift God has given me.

It was a good lesson in staying positive and acknowledging the gifts you've been given.

I am truly blessed.

Another thing I'm thankful for is the township approval for rezoning our "coming soon" Jenison studio. We should have some illustrations of our new studio in a few weeks. I can't wait til it's open for biz. You'll have to experience it to believe it!! We are so excited!!!!

So, it's a 7pm Wed night beach shoot, heard there's a storm's comin' but I figure I have time to hammer out some great frames (always the optimist).

Wind starts picking up, lighting way over the lake...I still have time.

Getting darker, loosing light, more wind...I still have time?

It starts to pour rain! Camera equipment and water no mixo. Between two bodies, three lenses, porta strobe, rf's and misc stuff I figured (in my head as I was running up to the truck for cover), well over 10,000 in gear getting wet. I thought my clients would get a chance to see a grown man cry.

The good news, we captured some great images and all of the equipment is fine!

The last image is my favorite, and it literally was the last frame.

Funny story, my senior says "I want to put sand on my face and have you take a picture".

I'm a bit skeptical but I'm up for anything. Everyone that was on the beach had cleared out about 15 minutes ago, we're loosing light FAST, I'm shootin' 2.8 at a 30th, around 100mm hand held, not the optimal conditions suffice to say. But we got it!

Just goes to show, we want to hear your ideas!

That being said, if she had suggested getting in a formal dress and laying on a log by the water for some shots...we might have to re-think. I've actually seen it done before and it's not good (although..., shot professionally it might be really nice:).

We custom tailor each session based on our client's needs. They love it and we love it, it's a win win!

Oh, quick note. We list sessions like our studio select and beach at 30 minutes and 1 hour but we usually double that if you have the time (at no extra charge). So plan extra time if you so desire.

We been getting a lot of calls where people think we're booked out months in advance. We do have open time slots, call us and we'll get you scheduled.

Another thing we've been hearing, "it's too good to be true" and "those shots are of the people who spend a lot" both not true. We treat all of our clients the same regardless of what they spend. We don't ask what your budget is, we just shoot each session the way it deserves to be shot, the right way! I must admit, I like the idea of raising our prices to meet the quality of work (I'm not talkin about $95 for an 8x10, that's just ridiculous, this isn't NY) we're keepin the price low as long as we can.

Also, we have a TON of new stuff coming up. Web updates, News, New offerings and products...We will try to post more often (since it's been a month since our last post!!!!).

Senior, Parade, Baby & Bag!

Wow, it's has been insanely busy. We have so much going on we haven't had time to even do a quick post in weeks. Now I have loads of images to pick from and not much time to do it. So I'm keepin' it simple, just a few for now and the rest will be added to the website later.

Seniors:

We are booking fast!!! We are currently averaging 10-12 senior bookings each week. August seems to be the most popular time for sessions. We still have openings so call us fast before we fill up.

A quick note on our senior specials. When we have a special going, say for example our June special, all you need to do to lock into that deal is to book your session. You don't have to get you pictures taken in that month to get the special. Also, if you lock into a current special by booking your session and a month later we run a different special which you prefer you can choose that special instead. That's how we do!

We've been booking lots of sessions because we are unique and different (and because our images, choices and pricing just plain rocks!) and we love it! It's been funny watching some of our competitors who claim to be "modern", "cutting edge" and "different" try and copy our style:) A month ago they were shooting on white bed sheets and now they're scrambling to try to assimilate our look and style. WE ARE TRULY FLATTERED! It's great because it lets us know were on the right track and it really is a compliment. (quick note to other photogs, we do copyright our images and composites so be very careful)

Parade:

Well, another parade gone by. Grandville's 4th of July parade was a riot!!!

We handed out just shy of 8,000 red white & blue beads and over 5,000 pieces of skittles, nerds, laffy taffy, starbust and other assorted treats. Here I was thinking I would have some leftovers to keep in the studios (and snack on myself) but no such luck. It was really cool to see a lot of our clients at the parade, we made sure to give them a handfull of beads instead of just one strand.

No new pictures of the float (it was the same as the Memorial Day float, check past blog posts to see it if you so desire). I did however manage to shoot some fireworks pics. Here's one of my favorites.

I know, I know, another same old same old fireworks shot. What photog hasn't shot fireworks. I needed some good shots for July promo materials and didn't have any so I figured I better get some for next year since I refuse to buy stock images (being a photog and all).

Everyone loves Kodak Endura metallic prints, the only downside is you have to handle them like they are the Dead Sea Scrolls. Just touching them (even with freshly washed hands) leaves fingerprints that won't come off. Dusting them with anything other than a feather duster leaves nasty scratches. I finally have a minute to post parade pics from Memorial Day. Yes, it's been that crazy busy.

Well, some of you may have already heard the news. We've been exploring the idea of adding new studio locations! We will always have our downtown GR studio but we're adding some others to the list.

We have clients in Rockford and in Cascade and we were looking for something East right in between, We found it, Lowell!
We found some land just across the street and down a little ways from the Meijer store. Once we have renderings of possible buildings from the architect we will post them on the site to get your input!

Our other location will be West near our current Jenison studio. Same with this one, once we have renderings of the proposed building we'll post them!

What an exciting time!

They like me, they really really like...

It's a well known fact that we love our clients, all of them! It's great to meet new people, learn about them and have fun together capturing images of their families that they will treasure forever.

We had a sneaking suspicion our clients took a liking to us as well, the hugs after a session, the smiles, the oohs and aahs when they see their prints.

The other day it really hit me when one of our clients stopped over to pick up her children's print order. It was a biggy (I'm talking about the kind that makes a senior order seem small). To top it off, after the repeated thank yous she presented me with a couple of gift cards (one to my absolute favorite, Logans and the other to my wife's favorite restaurant Olive Garden). I was just blown away!!!

First off, I'm just plain blessed to be able to do what I love for a living, using the gifts that God has given me, The Lord gets photo credit for all of my work!

Second, we should be the ones giving her the gift certificate! We truly love our clients and appreciate their business!

Third, how did she know what our favorite restaurants are? I'm sure it was just a coincidence but wow!

So we just want too say THANKS to ALL of our clients!!! We really appreciate your business and we love working with you!!!

I was editing some images of one of our senior reps and I just had to post this image. Straight out of the camera. One white lightning 1800 popped into an 18" umbrella, great light. I just love it.

Great Show!

We did our first show and the response was awesome!!

We talked with a lot of our current clients and met a lot of new clients as well.

People loved the fact that we had BIG prints of our images. There's nothing quite like razor sharp eyelashes on a 30"x40" print. We displayed a little bit of everything. One of the favorites was the gallery wrap canvas art, they were a big hit.

I can't wait til the next show!!

Another Two Photo Handbags Delivered!

These two bags were delivered this week. A B&W Candie bag and a Julia bag. The proud new owners were ecstatic to say the least!!!

We also received an interesting call from a new client who booked a handbag session yesterday. Apparently there are some other local photographers who are displaying photo handbags that they didn't even shoot!

We are a VERY disapointed to hear this. Not only is this an example of COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT, it's kind of deceptive to lead clients to believe that their studio shot it when it was actually another photographer. Ouch, smells like a lawsuit.

We're here to let you know that EVERYTHING on the CLICK website was shot by us!! No stock photos, other photographers images, etc. We even design and produce our own website, every pixel!!!

30 minutes or the pizza is free, well almost...

What a change from last Thursday!

A week ago it was 5 sessions for the day, today it was 6 deliveries for the day (and we ain't talkin bout pizza).

Wednesday I picked up 3 proof mags, two print orders and a photo handbag, called the clients to let them know they were in and ready for pick up and offered to drop them off Thursday if they were interested. An overwhelming yes from all! We had already planned on running around town today so why not save them the trip!

As I made the rounds from Hudsonville to Grandville to Jenison, to Allendale to Lowell to Grand Rapids back to Jenison it hit me (and I'm not talking about how I should have planned my route better)! We might just add a 1 day a week driver for deliveries!

It's not the first time we've done deliveries. We have clients who live in Rockford but work in GR so if we're headed to the downtown studio we'll drop the order off at their work. We have a lot of moms with two or more children and packing them all up for a quick pick up is a major ordeal (I know this first hand, I have a three month old baby).

It's nothing major, just another one of the things we do for our clients. We see a need, we fulfill it.

Wow, that was one long week. Between updating the website, sessions, marketing stuff and family time...I'll just sleep on the weekend! Yes, my week was really that busy. I got back from WPPI last Fri and my luggage is still sitting by the back door. Hopefully I'll unpack this weekend.
